A MUSICAL featuring tunes by Aussie rockers INXS has moved a step closer to Broadway.

Chris Murphy — the band’s manager from 1980 to 1995, who returned in 2008 — is in talks with a director to take on the project, the New York Post reports.

Murphy said that when he repped the band in the ’80s, “they just did what they were feeling at the time.”

When they brought in funk bassist Nile Rodgers to produce a 1983 single, Original Sin, their label said, “What the [bleep] is this?” Murphy recalled. “They were absolutely furious.”

But, “All these years later, the negative has been turned into a positive. A lot of bands have a sound, and they just keep to it ... It’s monotone. The depth of [INXS’] catalogue is quite unique.”

News Corp Australia revealed in July that Murphy set up a theatre company to mount the production, which is set to open in Sydney in 2017.

The phenomenal success of the miniseries, INXS: Never Tear Us Apart, which was watched by more than two million Australians and sold internationally, gave Murphy the impetus to forge ahead with the stage musical.

The band’s resurgence spurred sales of a greatest hits album to No. 1 on iTunes with their 1987 album Kick at No. 2, 27 years after its release.

Murphy said several West End producers had approached him about opening the show in London, but he and the band wanted to continue the renewed love affair Australian audiences have with INXS.

“When I came back on board with the band I wanted to turn INXS into one of the most iconic brands in Australia. We have done it and we have to continue to do it here,” he said.

“A lot of young people who are now fans never got a chance to see INXS live and this will be the place to see their music in a live setting.”
